The Cut : The Cut - Winter 2017
GOLF & LEISURE 23 itself subscribes to what we should be promoting, which is walkable golf that is sustainable. “It was important that a tournament of this magnitude should not be played on a generic golf course and Windross gives us the opportunity to be a little bit different compared to other LPGA Tour events. “ The nature of the course is that it’s strategic despite its wide fairways and players have to think as well as execute their shots. The nature of the course, with its pure fescue fairways and the requirements for shot-making, is definitely something I subscribe to. Spectators and the TV audience will enjoy it and while some of the girls might be indifferent to it, I think the best players will rise to the top.” The majority of the 132-strong field will be accommodated at the event’s official hotel, the Pullman, in central Auckland. Players will be ferried to and from the course each day. From a spectator point of view, while there will be no public parking available at Windross Farm, visitors will instead park at the adjacent Ardmore Airport. Goldstein reports initial ticket sales are strong but says there are still plenty available. “We’re looking for people from around country to come to the event, and we’d love to get support from people outside of Auckland. “We’re still looking for volunteers and if anyone is interested they can go to our website, nzwomensopen.co.nz, and find all the information there.” Goldstein is confident fans attending the tournament will enjoy great views of the action. “ There’ll be stands on the course, but there is some elevation at each hole, which makes Windross a really good course for spectators. As a course, it’s quite tight and it’s an easy walk, which was one of the key reasons for choosing Windross to host the event. If you compare it with The Hills, ABOVE: Even in miserable weather, massive crowds followed Tiger around the Paraparaumu links at the 2002 New Zealand Open. Can Lydia draw the same crowds to cheer her on to victor y at Windross Farm in the LPGA-sanctioned 2017 Mckayson New Zealand Women’s Open?
