ISSN - 1175-0545 I t was a real pleasure and a privilege to catch up recently with John Lister, an old friend from my days of playing golf for Canterbury in the 60s and 70s. John was the guest of honour at the Garden City Legends tournament at Russley Golf Club in Christchurch, where he’s something of a legend himself, having won the original (and prestigious) Garden City Classic four years running from 1971-74. Another Kiwi golfing legend was there, too: Sir Bob Charles, whom I also played with back in the day. Sir Bob, who turned 81 on 14 March, teed off in the Legends pro-am and shot a 78 – beating his age once again – to win the Super Senior section. Sir Bob, of course, is still active on the NZ golf scene (you can read his suggestions about revitalising club golf on page 62). John less so, although he spent 12 years on the PGA Tour and was dominant during the glory days of the Australasian tours. You can read more about his past exploits on page 94. Right now, though, I’m looking forward rather than back, anticipating what I regard as the ‘Greatest Show in Golf ’: the Masters. I was lucky enough to attend the 2012 event when Bubba Watson put on the Green Jacket. It was an unforgettable experience and I’ll be glued to Sky TV for the four days of the 2017 Masters. If you’re lucky enough to be heading to Augusta, or just wish you were, turn to page 25 where we begin our special 33-page Masters section – a photo essay on its magical venue, its champions and some of the famous incidents that have made the Masters so riveting. Elsewhere in this issue we take a look at golf ’s rising stars – the ‘Young Guns’ – Golf Traveller takes us to Mexico and Tahiti and our Golf Concierge reviews the top courses in Malaysia, a country I visited last year and can highly recommend for its accessibility, its pristine courses and great accommodation. Plus local news and personalities, instruction, equipment and much more... Enjoy. THE CUT GOLF & LEISURE FREEDIGITALEDITIONthecut.co.nz 12WELCOME A young John Lister in action on the PGA Tour.
