The Cut : The Cut - Winter 2016
GOLF & LEISURE 129 CROMWELL A 30-minute drive through the dramatic Kawarau Gorge brings you to Cromwell. The golf course, which dates from 1903, borders the main township and rates as the most inland links course in the country. It is linked to the Cromwell College Golf Academy. Green fees are $50 for NZ-affiliated players and $75 for overseas visitors, with special rates during winter. MILLBROOK It’s just a Bubba Watson drive from The Hills toMillbrook course, with only the Lake Hayes road in between; in fact the courses have joined forces in recent times to host the NZ Open. Millbrook has expanded from a modest 18-hole course to a world-class 54-holer, with more to come. The resort and spa, meanwhile has won a host of national and international awards. The green fee for a visitor is $150, with special winter rates applying. ARROWTOWN Until Millbrook and The Hills materialised, many golfers made the trek to Arrowtown just to play the quirky local course, which is a gem (and a mere four minutes’ drive from The Hills). It’s wonderfully scenic and suprisingly challenging, with giant schist rocks creating formidable hazards. The green fee is $50 for affiliated Kiwis. QUEENSTOWN (KELVIN HEIGHTS) A 25-minute drive from Arrowtown brings you to Kelvin Heights, which boasts some of the most spectacular views of any golf course in New Zealand, out over Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables. The green fee is $60 for an NZ-affiliated player. JACK’S POINT The new kid on the block, 20 minutes by car from The Hills. It too offers breathtakingly beautiful scenery, with a backdrop of the stunning Remarkables mountain range. Destined to stage tournaments of national significance, seasonal green fees are $155-$225 (including cart). Currently closed for maintenance until Aug. 19.
