GOLF & LEISURE 67 GOLF IN THE FAST LANE that competed in Majorca against 77 amateur golfers from 16 countries. The two-day tournament took place at the Arabella Golf Son Vida and Club de Golf Alcanada courses. Taiwan took out the team event, while New Zealand finished eighth; Brent Paterson coming third in the men’s gross competition. “ The trip of a lifetime” is how Paterson describes his experience. Paterson has enjoyed some highlights in a glittering amateur career. He was part of the New Zealand team that finished joint second with the USA – a team that included Phil Mickelson and David Duval – in the 1990 Eisenhower Trophy. He won the New Zealand Senior Men’s Championship in 2013 and played in a number of New Zealand Opens as an amateur. “I’ve played in a few professional tournaments and the event in Majorca was on a par with a professional golf tournament as far as the attention to detail was concerned,” says Paterson. “It was outstanding. It was a very Porsche-like experience. The event was extremely well organised, the service levels were phenomenally good and the luxury feel of it was something special.” Rufer finished in the middle of the pack in the men’s gross competition, but a saving highlight was going for a dip in the Med in the middle of his second and final round. “It was a stinking hot day,” says Rufer. “We came to the par- 3 17th and there was one group teeing off and another group behind them so there was a 20-minute wait at least. I’m a bit crazy sometimes and while I was waiting I saw the water. It looked so inviting, so I thought to myself, why not?” “So I went for a wander and lo and behold I found this gap in the fence.
