54 THE CUT RANDALL MUNRO HAS VISITED CLOSE TO 20 COUNTRIES AS THE PRODUCER OF TV’S HOLDEN GOLF WORLD AND HE’S COLLECTED SOME GREAT STORIES ALONG THE WAY. 54 GOLF WORLD INTERVIEW D id you hear the one about the Niuean prisoner who won his club championship? I’ll let Randall Munro tell it. “We went up to Niue with the former All Black Frank Bunce,” says Randall. “He’s of Niuean descent and he’s a tourism ambassador for this tiny island known as the ‘Rock of Polynesia’. The golf course had coral growing in the fairways so you were allowed to take a drop if your ball came to rest on the coral. The local prison borders the golf course and they’ve only ever had one prisoner in there. They don’t even lock him up because everyone on the island knows he’s the prisoner. He even has his own set of keys! As part of his prison sentence he was the greenkeeper for the golf course. He used to mow the greens every few days and play a round of golf pretty much whenever he wanted. The club championships were held the year we were up there and not surprisingly he won it in a canter! I’ve been to some top-class resorts and courses but things like that stick in your memory.” How did you get started in sports broadcasting? I grew up in Christchurch loving sport. I played rugby and cricket at school but I was no good so I decided I’d be a rugby commentator instead. I remember watching All Black tests and I used to type a match report straight after the game on Mum’s old typewriter. I left school and did a Bachelor of Communication Studies at AUT. When I graduated I got a job with Radio Sport and from there I got a part-time job with Sports Inc. That was in 2002 and I’ve been with them ever since, apart from a five-year OE in London. Do you play golf? Maybe a couple of rounds a year if I’m lucky. I’d love to play more. People have this impression that I get to play golf all the time but of all the courses I’ve been to around the world, the only place I’ve managed to fit in a round is Barnbougle Dunes in Tasmania. It’s consistently rated as one of the best courses in the world and we were out on the course just after sunrise with the wombats and the kangaroos. PRODUCING THE GOODS Left to Right: Matt Chatterton, Lydia Ko, Stephen Baker, Randall Munro.
